Monday 21 September 2009Homeland HelpWherever you're from originally, it can be helpful to know about the people who can represent you here in Belgium. Practically all countries of the world have officials working in their embassies (which exist to represent the country), and in consular services, which are able to help the countries' visiting and resident nationals. Paperwork and PassportsA country's consular office can give advice and assistance with administrative matters related to passports and their renewal, provide certificates needed for marriage, and offer guidance with the translation and endorsement of official documents required for some administrative actions. The birth of a baby born to expatriate nationals can be registered with a parent's consular office, and help is available in the event of the death of a national and the repatriation of their remains. Have a look in The AngloFILE directory of local English-speaking businesses and services for the relevant contact information in the category Consulates & Embassies. The AngloINFO INFOrmation Page Consular Services for Expatriates in Belgium gives additional information and links relevant to foreign nationals - in particular British, American and Australian citizens - resident here. And for guidance on what to do in the event of a death of an expatriate, see the AngloINFO INFOrmation Page Death & Dying in the Belgium. It's good to know that there's a helping hand available from home. Happening Now
