Belgian Postal Codes and Addresses

Belgian postal codes are written as a sequence of four digits. In general the first digit indicates the province. As Belgium is not the only country to use the four digit format it is often recommended to use the country code (B) before the numeric post code when writing addresses. When sending mail, capital letters are sometimes used for towns and cities.

In general, addresses in Belgium are written as follows:

  • Rue des Sables 46
    1000 BRUSSEL or BRUXELLES

Addresses in Flanders should be written using Dutch place names, and using French place names for the French speaking areas of Belgium. They can be in either language for the Brussels Capital Region.

Standard Letter Size

Standard letters must be:

  • rectangular shape, minimum: 90 x 140mm and maximum 125 x 235mm
  • franked in the upper right-hand corner of the front of the letter
  • maximum weight of 50g and maximum thickness 5mm

Standard letters use basic-rate stamps, available from post offices and some newsagents or tourist shops.

Non-standard size letters are more expensive to send. This includes square or large greetings cards because of the size restrictions. Stamps for non-standard letters and for parcels are only available from post offices.
