Stranger in a Strange Land

While an Embassy (headed by the Ambassador) works to represent a country in a foreign land in matters of politics and trade, the Consulate (headed by the Consul) is there to assist its visiting and relocated countrymen. Your nation's Consulate should be able to help with many practical matters concerning your life in Belgium.

What they do

Typically, the Consulate provides information and national documentation. It also deals with administrative matters such as the renewal and replacement of passports, and registration in the home country of births, marriages and deaths. Many Consulates can also provide convenient notarial services.

Worth knowing, however, is that your Consulate may also be able to help in times of distress, such as after an accident or violent assault, and direct you to appropriate English-speaking legal or medical experts.

Most nations' Embassy and main Consular office are located in Brussels, though you may find that the website of the Consular section of your Embassy has a great deal of useful and practical information.

  • See the Consulates & Embassies category in The AngloFILE, AngloINFO's local directory of English-speaking services, to get contact information for your nation's offices.
